The technique I prefer to use is the German method of short rows. It produces the same result as Japanese short rows, but does not require placing safety pins to mark each turn. The German method has a couple of advantages for me. First, as I’m working across the “pick up” row, I don’t have to find the wrapped stitch and pick it up, which can be a challenge with variegated yarns, dark yarns, or yarns worked at a fine gauge. Second, there’s a one-stitch transition between the short rows and the long rows. So rather than two long rows with two short rows stuck between them (for a total of four rows), there is a transition stitch that splits the difference.
